Winter is coming…

It’s time to wrap up warm and forget about the endless amounts of Christmas preparations. Time to put your feet up!

However you want to enjoy your freshly brewed cup of Joe there is always something new you can try. You might like to add the sweetness of chocolate and turn your delicious cup of coffee into a mocha or maybe add something a little stronger to warm the cockles.

What about spiced rum?

Well let’s start at the beginning – rum…

Rum is a type of alcohol that’s made from sugarcane or sugarcane by-products such as molasses or sugarcane syrup, this sugar is then distilled into a liquid alcohol.

Spiced rum includes ingredients outside of the sugar used to create the alcohol to change the taste. It can hypothetically be any colour and is a favourite for certain cocktails.

Coffee and spiced rum

This is a marriage made in heaven.

I have recently had the pleasure of meeting with Vince, Giles and Dich at The Portsmouth Distillery. They have a real passion for rum, and through their years in the industry, selling and tasting this versatile and flavoursome spirit it seemed the natural thing to do to start producing it.

Not only have these rum loving gentlemen created their own rum but also developed a world class Gin, to give Portsmouth it’s own Dry Gin for the first time in centuries. This amazing creation by The Portsmouth Distillery is Fort Gin. Something that all gin lovers MUST try! This in conjunction with 1968 Unaged Rum, Cinnabar Spiced Rum and Forum, Garden Rum means they are unstoppable in their quest to show the world what they have to offer.

Cinnabar is a lightly spiced rum named after the Cinnabar moth which frequents Fort Cumberland.  Based on the 1968 rum the spices (cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, coriander, nutmeg, Szechuan pepper and orange peel) are uniquely added during the 2nd stage of the distillation process.  Sweetened with The Distillery’s very own Costa Rican sugar syrup and with a hint of vanilla added prior to bottling, this makes for a delicately flavoured and beautifully clear product.

Now for the coffee

You may already have found your favourite coffee from our shop, if so then that is great news! If you are unsure what to pair up with our quirky cocktail of spiced rum and coffee then I would most definitely recommend the Costa Rican Tarrazu. Not only does this offer decadent creaminess, with big notes of orange and cocoa but when combined with a healthy dose of the Cinnabar Spiced Rum – wow, you won’t think twice about going back for a refill!

The Portsmouth Distillery Blend

Not only did I have the pleasure in meeting the guys from The Portsmouth Distillery but also to collaborate with them to produce a blend of speciality coffee beans to compliment their already growing collection of rum and gin. The Portsmouth Distillery Blend is currently available to purchase directly from the on-site distillery shop in Portsmouth and soon to be available in our online shop.

Decaf

Never to forget those that prefer the decaffinated variety of coffee, the distillery have The Portsmouth Distillery Decaf available too.
