Valentines Day is celebrated worldwide with lovers giving each other cards and gifts. The first Valentines Day goes back to the year 496, thought to have originated from a Roman festival.
The festival was called Lupercalia and was held in the middle of February, a time that was officially the start of their springtime. During the celebrations, boys picked the names of girls from a bowl and they would be boyfriend and girlfriend throughout the festival. Sometimes they would even get married!
The Roman festival was later on turned into a Christian celebration and St. Valentine was remembered during this time and St. Valentine’s name started to be used by many to express their feelings for the ones that they loved and adored.
Who was St. Valentine?
There is some mystery behind the identity of St. Valentine for whom the day is named. St. Valentine’s Day is associated with a famous saint, however, there are several interesting accounts of who he was – perhaps you’d like to choose your favourite? The Catholic Church has recognised at least three saints named Valentine all of whom were martyred.
The most popular story is that St. Valentine was a Roman priest in the third century AD. However, others insist that it was Saint Valentine of Terni, a bishop, who was the true namesake of the holiday. He too was beheaded; by Claudius II outside Rome.
The Emperor – The Dark Side
Emperor Claudius II had forbidden marriage as he thought single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families because married soldiers might be afraid of what will happen to them or their families if they died.
Valentine, the Roman Priest, is said to have declared that this was unfair so he arranged marriages in secret. When the Emperor heard of this, Valentine was thrown into jail until his trial and eventual execution.
Falling in love in unusual places
One of the men who was to judge Valentine was a man called Asterius. His daughter was blind and Valentine was supposed to have prayed with and healed the young girl with such an astonishing effect that Asterius himself became Christian as a result. Whilst in jail Valentine fell in love with the young girl and when he was taken to his death on 14 February he sent her a love letter, he signed it “From your Valentine”.
The truth behind the various legends about Valentine are murky, however, all of the stories emphasise his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic and most importantly a romantic figure
